LAKE WORTH, Fla. (WPBF) — A Florida pet store owner is asking the public for help identifying a woman who stole a puppy from his store during a robbery caught on surveillance video.
Susan Minix is the owner of West Kisses Pet Company, a pet store in Lake Worth. She received a call from her employees last Saturday that a 9-week-old Peketese, or Pekingese-Maltese, puppy had been stolen from the store.
“I was crying. I was so upset. We really, really love our puppies,” Minix said.
Surveillance video shows the suspect walking back and forth in the store’s park for about 20 minutes before taking the pup with her shortly after 4 p.m.
“She was playing with the pup here in this area and then she was out of the area a member of staff told her to put the pup back in the playpen which she didn’t. She put the pup under her jacket and walked out the door,” Minix said.
Staff members fear the pup will survive as he is so young and needs special care.
“If they’re not eating, if they’re stressed, which of course a situation like this is going to stress the dog out, so if they’re not eating, they can get low blood sugar. They can actually go into shock and die from it,” Minix said.
The pup has been microchipped and animal control and all vets within a 15 mile radius are aware of the situation.
“Please bring our baby back. He is a baby dog and he needs special care. We want to be able to take care of it. We want to know it’s safe,” Minix said.
To prevent something like this from happening again, Minix says she will put closed plexiglass in the park area and ask anyone who wants to watch the puppies to show their driver’s license.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
