Your Pet’s Carbon Footprint Matters: Sustainable Woman-Owned Pet Shop Launches to Reduce Climate Change Impact

Jennifer and Laura, business friends who get along much better than their pets! They launched their small, female-owned online business, The Kind Pet, to help pet owners reduce their pet’s carbon footprint.

The Kind Pet is a new sustainable online pet store that helps pet owners make eco-friendly choices to reduce their pet’s carbon footprint.

YORKVILLE, Illinois, USA, Oct. 5, 2022 / — As pet owners Laura Dolgy and Jennifer Roberge realized how wasteful caring for their pets could be and therefore been inspired to help people make smarter and greener choices. For example, pet food contributes 64 million tons of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of driving 13.6 million cars, released into the atmosphere per year according to this study. And then there’s pet food packaging, Pet Sustainability Coalition estimates that 99% of pet food bags end up in landfill. These figures are alarming and they are only the tip of the iceberg.

“A lot of people are trying to live more sustainably and it’s amazing! But what we’ve realized is that not everyone thinks about how things like their pet’s food choices and waste management can contribute to the climate crisis we find ourselves in right now. moment and we really wanted to help bring that to the fore,” says Dolgy. When the two became pet owners, Dolgy with cat Charlotte and Jennifer with dog Oakley, they decided to use their vast experience in e-commerce to enter the online pet business by joining forces. focusing only on sustainability.

Dolgy has his own digital marketing agency, Dolgify, and Roberge founded and operates two other e-commerce stores, so online retail is where they are most comfortable and have both have already worked to achieve their own sustainable goals. Now they are ready to dive into the pet market. According to Roberge, “The difficult part is that pet sustainability means different things to different people. Not all pet owners are ready to compost their dog’s waste or think about buying pet products. zero waste rather than nylon toys and poly-filled beds. Everyone follows their own sustainable path and we wanted to support change, whatever form it takes. So The Kind Pet was designed to help customers to find the products that best address their own eco-friendly pet care concerns while educating them on how to take the next step towards sustainable pet ownership. based on their sustainable values, such as recycled, plastic-free, handmade, low-waste, etc.

Although finding brands to work with was not easy. Their first questions to suppliers revolved around the product life cycle, where the products were made and where the ingredients came from. “Most of the big brands wouldn’t even discuss plastic packaging alternatives, or send us to their distributors who couldn’t tell us where the ingredients came from, for example. It was quite frustrating – where was the transparency? said Roberge. This led them to find small, independent brands that prioritize social impact and their carbon footprint and are 100% aligned with The Kind Pet’s mission. Dolgy says “We are very proud of the suppliers we have found and we are happy to promote small brands, many of which are owned by women like us, or BIPOC or who promote gender and social equality, which is extremely important. for us as good.”

Another important factor for The Kind Pet is to give back. As a woman-owned small business, they believe strongly in freedom of choice and were deeply saddened by the Roe vs Wade reversal. That’s why The Kind Pet donates 1% of all sales to NARAL Pro-Choice America. Another 0.5% of sales goes to supporting homeless animals through the Best Friends Animal Society, which offers adoption, neutering and education programs to protect pets.

The Kind Pet helps create a kinder, cleaner planet together. Let’s do our best to make conscious, ecological and socially responsible choices for our pets in order to reduce their carbon footprint. No act or change is too small and every gesture counts.
